Hello and welcome to the City of Waterloo!
As your new Mayor, I am excited for the opportunity to continue my public service after serving as Waterloo Alderman for Ward III the last eight years. I look forward to what we can achieve together. The future holds great opportunities to build on Waterloo’s thriving downtown and robust economy. My primary focus will be on improving the day-to-day operations with substantial technology upgrades, focusing on infrastructure enhancements and completing the water plant project.
Waterloo, which dates back to the 1800s, is now home to approximately 11,000 residents. We are a German-rooted rural community, with the comforts and charm of a small town, as well as conveniences and recreation of a larger city as we are just 30 minutes from St. Louis, Missouri. We are one of the safest cities in Illinois, with City government that is efficient, effective and fiscally sound.
We are very proud of our City! We have a lot to offer, including our excellent City services and utilities, our beautiful parks and walking trails, three golf courses, unique shopping and dining options (including two microbreweries and a wine bar) and an incredible public and private school system. Waterloo has a rich history, which can be seen on display at our three museums and on the brand new Heritage Wall, located on the north exterior wall of Frederico’s Restaurant!
But one of the greatest things about Waterloo, and the thing I love most about it, is the people. I am constantly amazed at how people with unique ideas and experiences work together to create shared values and the vision for this wonderful place, for the place we have chosen to call home. All that Waterloo has become and all that Waterloo will be is rooted in the people – in their talents, their dedication, and their compassion for one another, and I couldn’t be more proud to serve as your Mayor.
I invite you to explore our website to find out about all of the great events going on throughout the year. It is updated regularly with new, fun things to do. If you have an event that you don’t see listed, call City Hall and we would be happy to add it to our calendar.
Whether you’re looking for a place to visit, live or build a business, know that you are welcome in Waterloo!
Sincerely yours,
Mayor Stan Darter
